What's been happening here on the farm? You may well ask!
🍎🍏🍓
It's been ages since we wrote a blog, and thought it was high time we brought you up to date with the goings on here on the farm!
We hope you are all coping during these strange times and that you and your loved ones are all safe and well.
It's been a weird and whacky year so far!
The months following Christmas were cold and wet here on The Llyn Peninsula. Nothing new there then! We were very worried about getting the land ready for this year's crops for a while, but are catcthing up at last. Our poor tractor is in need of repairs and that has slowed us down a lot. Huw and Vincent have managed to get the old rotovator working so much of the prep has been done using that.
Then of course as Spring began to spring, the virus arrived in the UK. At first we panicked like everyone else, and wondered what on earth we would do. We qualify for little or no financial help here and couldn't see what to do. A big part of our income comes from our holiday let, www.arallt.co.uk which we had to close down immediately for the safety of the community. And the rest comes from sales of our jams and chutneys to shops and delis, cafes and at markets; these too are all shut.
But afer a few weeks of worrying we decided to take out fate into our own hands and start an organic fruit and veg box delivery around the peninsula! As every door closes, another one opens. If you push it. So we contacted our lovely organic wholesaler in Lampeter, set up an order, and Sharon used her social media skills, learned whilst marketing the cottage, to set up an online shop and a facebook ad campaign! We haven't stopped working since!
We are enjoying providing a service to people around the area, Huw is an excellent navigator, and Vince is loving planting veg for the boxes. He is a grower at heart, not a jam maker! Although he is excellent at making jam too of course!
As the year progresses we will have more and more Treddafydd Organic home grown produce in the boxes and bags, but for now we are very grateful to all at Watson and Pratts in Lampeter for keeping us all 100% organic 100% of the time. Our strawberries in the tunnels are looking as if they will be cropping in te next few weeks, the raspberries are looking fantastic, the berries outdoors are full of flower and the peach tree has lots of fruit set. It's quite exciting!
Another worry is we will have no volunteers this year from Europe to help us with harvesting, due to the Corona lockdowns. We may need to call on you for help!
We are still making our delicious organic preserves of course, and these are available in the online shop. We have a starter pack to try at a special price of only £11.00 for three jars. Why not send one to a friend to cheer them up? The shop is at the top of the page.
On a more personal note, Sharon has been learning to make sourdough bread and has become a little obsessed! There is nothing nicer than the smell of home baked bread, and she and Huw enjoyed home made hot cross buns on Sunday!
So, we are tired and a bit worried like you all, but keeping going and trying to be useful.
Please let us know what you are all up to. It's important to keep in touch at this time, more than ever.
Take care
Sharon Vincent and Huw
Team Treddafydd Organic!
